I’ve been spurred on by a thread on a XIV roleplay forum I frequent to post this blog entry. It started with a megathread talking about the coming Final Fantasy Fan Festival (appropriately acronymed “FFFF!”) and the fun speculation that sprang up from it. I replied to the thread itself, but I also wanted to go ahead and run with the thoughts that came forth.

As we near the point of FFFF! and its expected announcements for the next expansion to Final Fantasy XIV, it’s become common among players like me to try to divine the game’s future. So, let’s take a moment to throw the runes and read the tea leaves as I make completely baseless and wild assumptions that I’ll try to spin in to a facsimile of convincing clairvoyance.

“GIVE ME FROSTED MINI-WHEEEEATS!”

Gypsy Syl had touched on this in her own blog a while ago, but in my case it’s relevant to my rather long spans of silence here. I’ve taken a sort-of spring break, and I found it supremely healthy…which made me think that this would be good to talk about for the Newbie Blogger Initiative.

…so I sort of missed the original point.

Syl’s comment on my previous blog post about solo playing in MMO’s pointed out a couple of things:

  1. I was preaching to the choir.
  2. She wasn’t really asking why people solo so much as why said players feel the need to demand such things out of MMO’s–a failure of reading comprehension on my part.

Coincidentally, I just ordered this on Amazon! 😀

So let me expound upon this whole thing a little further. I think I touched on why people solo in an MMO. Now I’m going to directly talk about how MMO devs can make good design choices to feed solo players and group players without causing risk to the genre…and like anything else, it’s about striking a balance.

The Requisite Guild Wars 2 Post

The title of this post is really just a riff on how mandatory this all feels.  Quite literally every blog I read has had something to say about Guild Wars 2’s PAX reveal this past weekend.  And not many of them have had cuddly things to say.

So, in the interest of following the compulsion of the Blogging Borg (Blorg?) and to hopefully counter some of this negativity around the announce, I’m going to write why I think Raids in Guild Wars 2 could be a nice thing.

Blaugust Day 28 – That’s Not Heroism

This post idea kind of sprang to mind in addition to the post I was making about sidequests.  Specifically, not only are they useless fluff that don’t feel like a grand quest, but they also don’t make me feel like a great hero.  I mean, I don’t know how many epic poems Homer would have written about someone who killed five bulls and harvested their spleens.

“I can totally string that out to 50 stanzas, easily.”

Granted, I’m the only one bristling with weapons that approaches the “common folk” to help them with dangers that would very likely kill them in the attempt…but that sort of misses the idea.
